6 days / 5 nights @ East Macedonia and Thasos island Tour 
19 - 24 August 2013

Day 1

Departure at 07.30 We will follow National Road Athens - Thessaloniki (necessary stops on our way for coffee and lunch) and then via Egnatia Highway, we will reach Asprovalta Beach for our evening swimming time there where East Macedonia begins to surprise us. (For your convenience keep a separate case with your necessary things about your swimming). We pass over Strymon river, we enjoy the view through the southern shores of Kavala. We arrive at our hotel in Kavala area, dinner at hotel's restaurant.

Day 2

Buffet breakfast and then we depart for Ferry station in order to pass opposite where Thasos island lies. Initially, we will visit thasos antiquities where ancient agora and sanctuaries are. Then we will visit the traditional village of Panaghia, free time for walking  / coffee / photos, and then we will arrive at Golden Sand of Skala Potamias for swimming and lunch. We continue our circular route following island's coastline. We will visit Archangelos Monastery located at a place supervising north Aegean Sea. We arrive at Limenas port, free time to explore the capital of thasos island, and then we return back to Kavala (by ferry). Dinner at our hotel's restaurant.

Day 3

Buffet breakfast and we take our cameras, as we will embark in a train from Xanthi station till Stavroupoli station. From train windows we will enjoy our train pass along Nestos river in a narrow valley where Nestos meanders in a wonderful way. At Stavroupoli, our bus will wait for our arrival so that to continue on Rodopi mountain slopes in order to visit one of the biggest earth dams in Europe. This is Thesaurus Dam, that we will visit before leading to Drama city. Free time to visit Drama's historic center and its monuments, lunch time at the most known highlight of city, where the springs of St Barbara are. We return back to Kavala but first a quick stop at Lydia's Baptistry at a place where Lydia became the first female christian by Paul the Apostle. Dinner at our hotel and then by night time in Kavala's old port beneath old city and fortress in order to admire the Full Moon of August.

Day 4

Buffet breakfast and we will enjoy Kavala's city tour in order to know about its history and monuments. Also, we will visit Nea Karvali area where the pilgrimage of St Gregory known as the Theologian, is. Moreover, there we can taste sugared buns (greek traditional delight) as for them Nea Karvali is famous. Now its time to visit one of the most important archaeological sites of Macedonia, Ancient Philippoi surprise their visitors with the four Basilicas' remains, ancient theater etc. Our route will lead us on Paggaion mointain slopes where the Monastery of Panaghia Ikosifinissa lies. We will see a macedonian architecture's building and invaluable frescos. Lunch on our way, as we will approach Alistrati area where its Cave is. Time to visit the Alistrati's Cave and then we reach Serres. The city where our next hotel is. Dinner at our hotel's restaurant.

Day 5

Buffet breakfast and we depart for Nevrokopi village close to Greece - Bulgaria borderline, time for visiting the place and coffee. Another one cave, located along an underground river will give us wonderful experience by visiting it, and this is Maara Cave. The Serres'suburb of St john will be the place for our lunch and then, we will meet the historic centre of Serres in order to know about its history and monuments. We will complete our visiting in this area by arriving at the Monastery of St John the Baptist which is unique in this area for its architecture, its frescos, its location and its traditional products. dinner at our hotel's restaurant.

Day 6

Buffet breakfast and be ready for our last day of tour. Two lakes are going to give us the last scenery and amazing photo shots from east Macedonia. Kerkini lake, a famous wetland where extremely important migratory birds pass, coffee stop and time for photos (optionally, boat trip in the lake). And the last one, Doirani lake which lies between Greece and FYROM with its old train station and the famous battlefields since 1913 (in a distance there is Military cemetery for Greek and British soldiers). We return to Athens following National Highway enjoying our necessary stops for coffee and lunch.
